Study design
Multi-center
Open label
RCT
Population
Characteristics of study participants
59.0% female
41.0% male
N = 116
116 patients (68 female, 48 male).
Inclusion criteria: adult patients undergoing lung resection for non-small cell lung cancer.
Key exclusion criteria: metastatic disease; acute uncontrolled cardiovascular or respiratory issues; decompensated HF, severe aortic stenosis, uncontrolled arrhythmia, or acute coronary syndrome; non-ambulant; cognitive impairment; Eastern Cooperate Oncology Group status 3 or 4.
Interventions
N=58 home-based exercise and self-management program (postoperative 3-month home-based exercise and self-management program, supported by weekly physiotherapist-led telephone consultations).
N=58 usual care (usual postoperative medical, nursing, and allied health care).

Home-based exercise and self-management program
Usual care
No significant difference ↔
No significant difference in self-reported physical function at 3 months, 30-item EORTC Core QoL Questionnaire score (77.3 points vs. 76.3 points; MD 1, 95% CI -6 to 8).
Secondary outcomes
Significant increase in Short Physical Performance Battery overall score at 6 months (11.2 points vs. 9.8 points; MD 0.8, 95% CI 0.1 to 1.6).
Significant increase in mean Short Physical Performance Battery gait subscore at 6 months (3.9 points vs. 3.5 points; MD 0.4, 95% CI 0.1 to 0.6).
Significant increase in 6-minute walk distance at 6 months (494 m vs. 412 m; MD 50.9, 95% CI 6.7 to 95.1).
Conclusion
In adult patients undergoing lung resection for non-small cell lung cancer, home-based exercise and self-management program were not superior to usual care with respect to a self-reported physical function at 3 months, 30-item EORTC Core QoL Questionnaire score.
