The SEDAN score is a clinical calculator used to predict the risk of symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage (sICH) after thrombolytic therapy in patients with acute ischemic stroke. The acronym SEDAN stands for "Sugar (blood glucose), Early Infarct Signs, Dense cerebral artery sign, Age, and NIHSS score".
This scoring system applies to patients who have suffered an acute ischemic stroke and are being considered for thrombolytic therapy. The SEDAN score helps clinicians to stratify the risk of sICH, a serious complication of thrombolytic therapy, and thus aids in making informed decisions about the use of this treatment.
The SEDAN score is not applicable to patients with hemorrhagic stroke, those who are not candidates for thrombolytic therapy, or those with contraindications to this treatment. It should also be used with caution in patients with severe renal or hepatic impairment, as these conditions can affect blood glucose levels and the metabolism of thrombolytic agents.
