This scoring system is used to quantify the severity of the inhalation injury, which can help guide treatment decisions and provide prognostic information. 

The AIS for inhalation injury takes into account factors such as the presence of facial burns, singed nasal hair, carbonaceous sputum, and abnormal breath sounds. Each of these factors is assigned a score, and the total score is used to classify the severity of the inhalation injury.

The AIS is specifically designed for use in patients with suspected inhalation injuries. It is not applicable to patients with other types of respiratory injuries or conditions. Furthermore, it may not be suitable for use in patients with pre-existing lung diseases, as these could potentially confound the scoring.

D. Severe inflammation with friability, copious carbonaceous deposits, bronchorrhea, or bronchial obstruction
E. Mucosal sloughing, necrosis, or endoluminal obstruction
