DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for autism spectrum disorder
Persistent deficits in social communication and social interaction across multiple contexts (such as social-emotional reciprocity, nonverbal communicative behaviors, and interpersonal relationship development)
Restricted, repetitive patterns of behavior, interests, or activities, manifested by ≥ 2 of the following: stereotyped or repetitive behaviors; inflexible adherence to routines; restricted, fixated interests; hyper- or hypo-reactivity to sensory input
Onset of symptoms starting in the early development period, although symptoms not become fully manifest until social demands exceed limited capacities.
Clinically significant impairment in social, occupational, or other important areas of current functioning, as a result of symptoms.
Exclusion of other diagnoses that better explain symptoms, such as intellectual disability (intellectual developmental disorder) or global developmental delay.
