The CKD-EPI equation estimates Glomerular Filtration Rate (GFR) using serum creatinine, age, sex, and race. It's more accurate than the MDRD equation, especially at higher GFR values, and is the current standard for estimating kidney function in clinical practice.
Limitations
The equation may be less accurate in certain populations including elderly patients, those with unusual muscle mass, very high or low body weight, or unusual diets. It should not be used in acute kidney injury. Results should be interpreted alongside clinical findings and other kidney function markers.
