SAH-coated catheter for CA-UTI
Trial question
What is the role of silver alloy hydrogel-coated catheter in critically ill patients?
Study design
Single center
Single blinded
RCT
Population
Characteristics of study participants
44.0% female
56.0% male
N = 132
132 patients (58 female, 74 male)
Inclusion criteria: patients requiring indwelling catheterization in the ICU
Key exclusion criteria: estimated time of indwelling catheter < 14 days; long-term use of glucocorticoids or immunosuppressive drugs; malignancy; hematological diseases; autoimmune diseases or immunodeficiency; history of structural urinary tract disease, urinary calculus, urethral malformation
Interventions
N=64 silver alloy hydrogel-coated catheter (receipt of an indwelling BIP Foley catheter)
N=68 conventional catheter (receipt of an indwelling siliconized latex Foley catheter)
Primary outcome

NNT = 6
Significant decrease in catheter-associated UTIs at day 10 (7.8% vs. 22.1%; RR 0.35, 95% CI 0.05 to 0.65)
Secondary outcomes
Significant decrease in the rate of urine positivity for WBCs on day 7 (15.6% vs. 33.8%; RR 0.46, 95% CI 0.09 to 0.83)
Significant decrease in the number of viable bacteria isolated from catheter tip on day 14 (7.44 x 104 cfu/mL vs. 3.21 x 104 cfu/mL; RR 0.023, 95% CI 0.01 to 0.04)
No significant difference in death at day 28 (11.7% vs. 14.5%; RR 0.81, 95% CI -9.02 to 10.64)
Conclusion
In patients requiring indwelling catheterization in the ICU, silver alloy hydrogel-coated catheter was superior to conventional catheter with respect to a catheter-associated UTIs at day 10.
