The definitive treatment for pheochromocytoma is surgery, but in patients who are past 24 weeks gestation, problems with tumor accessibility may delay surgery.
Pretreatment with an α-blocker, such as phenoxybenzamine or doxazosin, is recommended prior to surgical removal of the tumor to reduce maternal and fetal mortality.
