The Modified Wood's Clinical Asthma Score (mWCAS) is a clinical calculator used in the management of patients with asthma. It is specifically designed for pediatric patients, typically those aged between 1 and 18 years, who are experiencing an acute asthma exacerbation.
The mWCAS is used to assess the severity of an asthma attack and to guide treatment decisions. It evaluates five clinical parameters: oxygen saturation, presence of wheezing, degree of retractions, respiratory rate, and level of consciousness. Each parameter is scored from 0 to 3, with higher scores indicating more severe disease.
The mWCAS is not recommended for use in adults or in children under 1 year of age. It also may not be appropriate for patients with chronic lung diseases other than asthma, or for patients with conditions that could affect their level of consciousness, such as neurological disorders or sedative medication use.
